FIGHT FOR FLIGHT: Hard working pooches in the spotlight after Near Miss at New York’s LaGuardia Airport
When United Airlines Flight 1549 was forced into the icy Hudson River on January 15, 2009, it brought into the nation’s collective conscience an issue most Americans rarely, if ever, think about. That is the danger that large migratory birds present to personal and commercial aircraft. Airports spend millions each year to prevent this rare and potentially deadly occurrence. Everything from environmental controls to shooting these birds on sight is used in the battle to keep the airways safe. One method that has gained traction in recent years is the use of specially trained dogs to harass and chase birds out of potentially dangerous space on and around airport grounds.
